This is a very impressive source of imformation.I have been researching it for myself and my sons who never had the opportunity to meet their grandfather who served as a doctor in 325th Medical Batallian(1944-47) (part of a Collecting Company.)My parents were married before he enlisted and so my mother still has several postcards and a box full of pictures he had developed in Germany while he was there with the occupation army -some names of people are written on the back- it has been a wonderful experience discovering this website

I'd also like to record what I can for the Smithsonian project (oral history of WWII). I remember seeing the family name at Ft. Benning in 1968 while in jump school. I don't think that General Burress is a relative as my family was from Missouri. I have often wondered if this could be a person form some other branch of the family.

My uncle THURMAN LEO MORRIS from Anadarko, Oklahoma served in WWII Europe as a private in the U.S. Army. My grandfather was Earl A. Lambert. He was from Morganton, NC. I think he was in the 397th Infantry Reg. (Company A). I have been told only a few things about his experiences. My father, George C. Delmer served in the 100th ID during WWII. I don't know which regiment he served with, but am pretty certain he was a machine gunner in a heavy weapons platoon or company. I believe he used a water-cooled MG. My father never would speak much, if at all, about his experiences in combat. He passed away of natural causes in 1974. If possible, I would like to learn which regiment he served with.

I served in F Company 398th from November 12th /44 until February 6th/45 and can only make my mark in that I was the first man in the division or 7th Army for that matter to reach the Maginot Line-I happen to be first scout on that particular day which was December 12th or 13th/44.No one has disputed it from my buddies. I am off tomorrow for Tampa to attend our reunion. Looking forward to it with pride and passion. Its always a moving experience.

Greetings. I am the son of Lt. Col. George F. Spiegel, 2nd Bn. CO, 399th. Like so many other veterans, Dad talked little of WWII. And like so many other sons and daughters of veterans, I did not become interested in what my father did until the "primary source" of information was gone. Dad died in 1995. In my search for information the WWW, the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) web site, and the 100th Division web site have been invaluable. I would like to share what I have learned over the past several years. Dad was commissioned in 1937 and served with the 8th Division and then the 80th Division before a two-month stint as an Air Corps cadet in 1939. From 1942-43 he was a Company, then a Bn Cmdr at the Tank Destroyer Replacement Center at Camp Hood, TX. He joined the 100th as a Bn Cmdr in June of 1944. In July of '45 he was transferred to the 63rd Division as the Regt Cmdr of the 253rd Regt. Back in the U.S. he served as a G1 with the 2nd Army HQ before being transferred to MacArthur's GHQ Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan where he served as a G2 in CID. In 1952 he was assigned the Infantry ROTC at the University of Illinois where he served until 1957. That year he was assigned as a KMAG Senior Advisor in Korea. He finished his career as a 5th Army Advisor to the Illinois National Guard. He then taught for many years in a grade school in Champaign, Illinois. I have a video tape that he narrated some years ago about some of his experiences in France and Germany. In it he speaks highly of his radioman, Bob Corley, his driver Cpl. Cole, Capt. Smith (Co E), Capt. Heuberger (Co G), Lt. Morgan, Maj. Ong, Sgt. Lavin, and his 925th FA liaison, Capt. Eddy. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone would like to share. Dr. George F. In particular, I am looking for someone who may have witnessed the events when he took a shrapnel wound to his arm. This was a relatively minor wound and not wanting his parents (my grandparents) to know he was not in the back lines as he had told them, was not submitted for the purple heart. I would like to have Irv receive his purple heart at long last. I have very few details except that it was in Germany during the rat race to Berlin. I visited the town of Bitche in France, and I wanted to let the "Old Soldiers" know that those people did not, nor will they forget.My father was attached to the 100th during WWII and was one of the soldiers that helped to liberate that town. They had a beautful memorial in several places for the soldiers and treated me "an Old Soldier's daughter" with great respect...

My father, Ivan Emil Ogan, served in the 100th. Except for the time he served in the army, he lived his entire life in Akron, Ohio. He passed away in 1994, and was buried with military honors in his home town. My mother, my husband, and I are in search of any records or documents or personal remembrances of Ivan in the 100th. He, like so many others of his generation, talked little of his experiences after he came home and we really don't know where to start. Because of a few things he let slip over the years, we think he may have been captured and imprisoned for a short period of time before the war's end. My late husband, James Edward Snyder dogtag #33893790, served in the 100th Infantry during WWII. He died February 13, 2000, in Springfield, Ohio. I am sorry to say that I did not write down the Company, Unit, Battalion, Regiment, or Division he was in or any of the stories he told me about his experiences during the war in Germany. I remember his mentioning the names of towns such as Heilbronn and Bitche. Now that it is too late, I am trying to piece this together. Any information anyone could give me would be highly appreciated. I know there must be a way to find the Unit, etc., I just don't know how to go about it.

Dear mister Tessmer, Great website. It is nice to see that more and more American units have their own website. I noticed your conclusion that the destroyed StuG was probabely a victim of fighter-bombers (JaBo's). I'd like to note that the roof was blown out whenever the ammo storage was detonated by a hit. This could obviously happen in case of an air-attack, but it was also very easy to "blow the roof out" when a tank or AT-tank gun hit the ammo storage. Just my 2 cents. Regards, Timo

In talking with my cousin recently he told me that his mother (my fathers sister) had mentioned to him that my dad had been wounded in action but refused his purple heart for fear of upsetting his mother.In his "war stories" to me as a kid he had never mentioned it.If possible I would like to corroborate this and have the purple heart presented to my father- if valid. Spent a little time with 10 or 11 guys from Co. B 399th at Vineland NJ this week end. Their "program" said the 100th went into action on Nov. 9. They got that date from Stephan Ampbrose's "Citizen Soldiers." I KNOW we - the 3rd Bn. 399th,- relieved an elementof the 45th Div on Nov 1 and our first major attack was on Nov. 6 at St. Remy; when our friend Bruno Viani was wounded, as well as the C.O. of Co. I the Greyhounds, Cap. Travis Hopkins. Item Company lost a bunch of guys that day. Stephan Ambrose needs to be better informed. maybeour"last" elements go there on the 9t. My Dad John C. Brockmiller of Brooklyn, NY served with the 100th Calvary Recon troop which was attached to the 100th Div. He landed in Marseille in Oct and Ran over a land mine in Dec 1944 around the Lemberg area of the Vosge mtns. He was severely wounded. In March 1945, I was in an antiaircraft unit attached to the Third Army when they crossed the Rhine River at St. Goar, Germany. We lived in a large house there for several days that was owned by a man named von Viebahn. I am trying to find out more about him. In your hisstory file, there is a German General with that name who commanded the 257th Infantry Division as they fought against the American 100th Infantry Division near the Maginot line to the west of the ciy of Bithe in December of 1940. I am wondering if this could be the same person and if anyone knows anything about him?

I'm so glad about this site. My Dad was in the 398infantry and the 100th division . He went over on the Queen Mary transport. He was wounded 1-10-1945 in France and still carries the bullet in his hip. Funny that most of these heroes cannot talk about this war! Pop can't to this day and I know it hurt him badly to see such horror! His whole unit was wiped out except him and one other. I found a picture of him with those guys on the net and when I showed him, he was so angry at me for making him remember. I am proud of my Dad and uncles and all the people who gave so much to insure America's freedom. I love my Dad very much. I'm glad they are finally going to do the War Memorial n Washington DC., but they should have honored our Vets sooner! 99% of these Vets will never live to see it's completion, and that is so sad! I'm glad this web site is available. Thank you so much.

I love your website. My dad fought with the 373rd Field Artillery and as I get older I am awed with the deepest respect for him and all the men and women who fought so bravely to preserve freedom. This site gives me the opportunity to find out more about this part of his life. He doesn't talk about it much so now I can find out more on my own and make sure that the story of this chapter in his life lives on in my children and grandchildren. Thnak you for this website. You have done a terrific job of setting it up and giving us, the children of the veterans, the opportunity to know our fathers better. Morrie leVine is looking for a summary of events form our landing in marseiles to the VE Day - to give to the French representative at the Sept. Reunion; as they French want to issue a letter of appreciation to all the guys who served in the Division during the war. I picked out all the events i could from The Story of the Century: leaving our most of the anecdotes and much of the discussions of other units. It runs to 9 and 1/2 pages! My grandfather, James Elvis Christy, of Indiana served in the 100th Division, Co. K, 397th Regiment. He was a Machine Gun NCO, arriving in Europe 5 Dec 44 and departed 8 Jan 46. He received a Bronze Star along with several other medals and citations. He would never speak of the war except to tell a story of how he shot one of his own men when this guy was attempting to sneak back into camp. Said it was the biggest favor he ever did anyone because he wasn't hurt bad but he was sent on home. Grandpa died in 1989 and his records were lost in the fire in St. Louis. Anyone who knew of him or knows why he won the Bronze Star I would love to hear from you. Thank all of you for your sacrifices during WWII, my family honors you all. Sherry Ward

This updates my inquiries about my father Homer Johnson. See below. I have been told by my mother Frances Moore Johnson formerly of Greenville, SC, that he was friends with Abe Myers of New York City area. Does anyone know this name. HOMER JOHNSON I would like to amend and supplement my previous posting. My Father was 2nd. Lt. in the 398th Inf. Co. C of the 100th Division. He was at Ft. Bragg at least on September 4, 1944 (I found a 5 day pass to Greenville, SC, which was signed by 1st Lt. James L. Rimlinger). Dad received a battlefield commission from S/Sgt around 16 Dec 1944 according to documents signed by Elwood D. Hollister, Jr. Capt. 398th Inf. signed at Sarrebourg, France. I have very little information after that date, other than he was in the command of a POW camp until discharged on 7 June 1947. On an other note he received his Century Division Rangers Certificate of Proficiency at S/Sgt Homer Johnson Co. C, 398th Inf on 13 October 1943, which was signed by R E Duff, Col. 398th Inf. Any information would be appreciated. Since it has been over two years since my first note, I am attaching it again to hopefully refresh some of you. I was very pleased to find such a comprehensive site about my favorite subject: How a group of people, larger than my small city, could supply all their physical, mental, and emotional needs while moving through a hostile environment. I was astounded at the complexity of the organization. I can now move on to the next phase. What kind of major equipment, particularly vehicles, were alloted to each unit in an infantry division? Were certain vehicles allocated to certain personnel? There's all kinds of info about vehicles in armoured divisions, but infantry divisions had thousands of them also. I arrived in ETO as an infantry replacement in April 1945 and was assigned to AT platoon, HQ Co. 2nd Bn, 397th Inf. Regt. So I was a late comer to the Division. I have just found out about the 100th Inf. Div. Assoc. and have joined it. The web site is a fantastic source of great information about a great outfit. I was subsequently transferred to the AT Company, 29th Inf. Regt. and remained in that outfit until rotated home in Aug. 1946.

This is a follow-up to my earlier e-mail. Dad (Joe C. Stall) was with M co., 398th from the time they entered the ETO until he was captured at Heilbronn on 4-4-45. I recently learned that he had a camera with him until the attacks on the forts at Bitche. Evidently, he dropped his pack while in the attack, and when they were brought back up, he could not find his own ruck sack. I assume some other soldier got his. If anyone happens to have pictures that were taken during this time with a similar story attached to them, I would surely be interested in obtaining copies. Thanks

I am looking for anyone who may have any information on my father, Ben R. "Pete" Horton. He was in the 399th., 2nd. Battalion, Company F. He was wounded near Heilbronn on Friday April 13th., 1945. His platoon was ambushed while crossing a bridge and he jumped ino a near dry river bed. He was temporarily paralyzed from the waist down and played dead to survie. A farmer found him and one other GI alive, pulled them from the river and hid them in his barn. He said they nearly shot that barn to pieces during the night. He was later evacuated to France for rehabilitation. He died in 1970 and would tell me alomost nothing concerning the war. If anyone has any information, please contact me.

I am looking for information on my uncle, SSgt. Carl P. Osterdahl who was killed in action in France on or about 12/4/44. He is buried in Lorraine cemetery in France. Anyone from the 397th Co.B remember him? I am looking for the particular battle he was killed in. My father, PFC Neil R. Osterdahl, another uncle, Evert Osterdahl and my aunt, Ethel V. Osterdahl were all in the US armed forces during WW2. All have passed on; Neil in '75, Evert in '75 and Ethel in '99. I would like amend and supplement my previous posting. My Father was 2nd. Lt. in the 398th Inf. Co. C of the 100th Division. He was at Ft. Bragg at least on September 4, 1944 ( I found a 5 day pass to Greenville, SC, which was signed by 1st Lt. James L. Rimlinger). Dad received a battlefield commission from S/Sgt around 16 Dec 1944 according to documents signed by Elwood D. Hollister, Jr. Capt. 398th Inf. signed at Sarrebourg, France. I have very little information after that date, other than he was in the command of a POW camp until discharged on 7 June 1947. On an other note he received his Century Division Rangers Certificate of Proficiency at S/Sgt Homer Johnson Co. C, 398th Inf on 13 October 1943, which was signed by R E Duff, Col. 398th Inf. Any information would be appreciated. Since it has been over two years since my first note I am attaching it again to hopefully refresh some of you. FYI, Dad died on the date (November 14th) in 1980. What a wonderful web site. My father was Francis V. Gregory, who served in the 397th Infantry Regiment. The Citation for the Award of Bronze Star Medal to him reads "for meritorious service in direct support of combat operations during the period 12 November 1944 to 22 April 1945, in France and Germany. As a chaplain's clerk and driver, Corporal Gregory discharged his duties commendably throughout this period. He frequently volunteered to evacuate casualties from forward areas under hostile artillery fire and on one occasion was instrumental in the evacuation of five wounded men in the face of intense enemy fire. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty represent the finest military traditions. Entered military service from Orlando, Florida." My father passed away on May 3, 2000. He often spoke to me of his time in the service and how much he enjoyed the comraderie of his fellow servicemen. I miss him terribly, and it was a real joy for me to find this web site. I found this terrific website while browsing for information about the Army Signal Corps in France and the Battle of the Bulge. My father, Louis H. Lemoine, now deceased, was a Signal Corps officer under General Patton towards the end of the war. He also served in Thule,Greenland from 1941-1943, tough on a southern boy! I was reading a book on the 399th in battle and have two questions: 1. Throughout the book the authors would refer to the red battalion, white battalion and blue battalion without cross referencing them to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd battalions. What is the proper cross reference? 2. In the book it is mentioned a couple of times that the 1st battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit citation. Was it only Company C which received the award or the are members of Company A and B also entitled to wear the award? If someone could respond to my questions via email I would be very grateful. I was a machine gunner in Company D, 399th. Went over with the Division on the USS McAndrew (sp?) landed in Marseilles was trucked to the front, relieving some of the 45th Division. It has been reported that I was in the first elements of the Division to reach the front lines. I was wounded near St. Remy after only about ten days on line November 10, 1944. I returned to active duty after about three weeks. I had been hospitalized in Epinal. I was at Lemberg where we received so many casualties. I stayed with the Company through the bitter winter of 1944/45 until I was sent to the hospital first in Epinal, next in Dijon and Lyon and bach to Epinal. Just the morning I was to be shipped back to the Company, I came down with hepatitis (yellow jaundice) and stayed in the hospital in Epinal until sometime in June, then to the replacement depot in Worms where I stayed because my records had been lost with so many trips to the hospital. I rejoined the Company at Nurtigen or Essinglen near Stuttgart. Then I was sent to Vaihingen am Enz for something like 5 months. I did not have enough points to go home with the Division, so I was sent to Karsruhe until I was finally sent home in April, 1946. My very best wishes to all who survived and to all the children and other relatives of the men who served with the 100th Division! I have been very fortunate to have four children and seven grandchildren plus a wonderful wife of fifty-two years!

I left the 186th Field Artillery at Dijon, France, after having participated in the Normandy Invasion, St. Lo., Caen, Falaise Gap, Leige Belgium, liberation of Paris and dug in at Dijon. The 186th FA, formerly 106th Infantry Reg, New York National Guard, Inducted into Federal service Jan 1940 along with brother unit 14th infantry NYNG,(entered service as 187th FA)both Brooklyn Nyregiments. Anyone out there who remembers, or was a memeber of either unit would be welcome to communicate through this medium. I would like to hear from other "replacements" from the 186th and for those who are curious about what happened to me--I'm still around and kicking with a fifth battle Star, a Bronze Star and a most important CIB.

My father, Chuck Stanley, served in the 100th and tells of a number of stories about the fighting. His unit was trapped and told to defend a bridge. they fought off repeated German attacks but the Germans finally ignored them and were marching through the region. He and another of his men scouted the town out and noticed that German machine gunners and snipers were up in the towns buildings and that German soldiers were marching through and veering off to the right. He told his men to prepare to march through the town like a german unit. As the sun dropped he and another man had timed out the German units and when there was a pause the platoon marched down through the town..on the orders of march like a german. When the unit finished going through the town they veered toward the American lines.

I am a recent neighbor and friend of Bill Law(2nd Bn. 397th Inf. 100th Div.). I was born in 1943 and have always had a moderate interest in the history of WW II. Until I met Bill, I had always thought that the highlights of the war in Europe consisted of the Italian Campaign, the Normandy Invasion, the liberation of Paris, the battle of the bulge, etc. I had never heard of the Vosges Moountains Campaign of Oct. 1944-Jan. 1945, but, I have now thanks to him. I was an Army helicopter pilot in Viet Nam in 1969, and you all have my respect and gratitude. Thanks guys!

On 6 May 00 my wife and I had the honor of spending the day with 2 vets of the 100th(Bill Glazier and Bob Heller) in Bitche. It was an incredible experience spending time with these gentlemen on the actual terrain in which they fought. The words admiration and respect do not do justice to the way we felt as we listened to their stories. My wife and I are both stationed in the Army in Germany; as soldiers, the sacrifice that all the WWII vets made really hits home. We will be returning over the Memorial Day weekend to have dinner with these fine people and to attend the services at the St. Avold cemetery. I would like to thank all of you vets, your sacrifice and sense of duty will never be forgotten.

This weekend we had the honor of attending a tour of combat sites of the 100th Infantry Division in Bitche, France. Our tour leaders were William Glazier and Bob Heller. We cannot find the words to express our most sincere gratitude to these gentlemen. Mr. Glazier has been especially helpful to me (Jaimy) in finding information regarding PFC Robert Hammonds, 397th Infantry Regiment in 1945. The tour was exceptionally good. We were honored to be able to spend time and listen to the experiences of these WWII heroes. Allways check your great web-site whatever happened in the springtime 1945. I live near Heilbronn at this small village JAGSTFELD. I heard from my parents what happened in this area. Took also notice of that photo taken on the 5th of April 1945 in front of a house/barn nearby. Some members of the E-company 398 Infantry Regiment hanging around this building. This is a follow-up to my earlier e-mail. Dad (Joe C. Stall) was with M co., 398th from the time they entered the ETO until he was captured at Heilbronn on 4-4-45. I recently learned that he had a camera with him until the attacks on the forts at Bitche. Evidently, he dropped his pack while in the attack, and when they were brought back up, he could not find his own ruck sack. I assume some other soldier got his. If anyone happens to have pictures that were taken during this time with a similar story attached to them, I would surely be interested in obtaining copies. Thanks.

I have a recommendation of two excellent books to read especially for those of us of the baby boomer generation or later. Tom Brokaw has written both books. "The Greatest Generation" Which I read and opened My eyes to the hardships faced by the WW2 generation. The other book also by Brokaw contains letters from GI's during the war era. My sister read it and said it was better than the first one. Put these on your "must read" list. enjoy!

Excellent website, and a fitting tribute to the officers and men of the 100th Infantry Division! I am beginning to attempt to trace the service of my late Father, Horace Justice Stepp, Jr. of High Point, N.C. who served in the 100th. Apparently his service records were destroyed by fire in the St.Louis repository. I recollect him telling me he was wounded by a German 88 round, and recovered in Nuremburg. I am unsure of his regiment, and many other details. Would welcome any information anyone might know and offer about him.

I just noticed the 824th Tank Destroyer batallion fought alongside the 100th infantry division. Any tank destroyer men from the 824th out there? If any one from M Co. 399th is looking for or knows Roland E. Tuttle he is alive and well living in Kittery ME. Roland is my next door neighbor and I think the world of him. He speaks of his military days often and those who were with him by name. Roland was a Tech Sgt. at the time he was wounded on 1 January 44, his unit was working their way torwards Bitche. Congratulations on a great webpage and thank you for all of the work you've done on it! I saw a comment in a veteran's website guestbook from a fellow who'd just read that new WWII novel, "THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY" and recommended it highly. Always eager to read about military history, I got a copy from barnesandnoble.com and thought it was just terrific. The novel offers a fascinating passage through WWII, while telling a stirring story of courage and dedication to doing what is right, no matter what the cost. I was happy to have been told about the book, so I'm passing on the word whenever I visit a veteran's website. But enough about that, my only suggestion for your page is to add more of the kind of stuff you already have. If something isn't broke it doesn't need fixing. Keep up the good work!

I was assigned to "G" Company 398th Regiment as an Infantry Replacement in May of 1945. The CO assigned me to the 4th Platoon Mortar section. Is there anyone out there from that outfit? The company was stationed about 10/15 miles from Stuttgart in the small town of Endersbach. The group I came into "G" Co. with was transferred to the 15th Inf. Reg. 3rd Inf. Div. in Oct.1945. A few months ago I learned my grandfather Clifford "Gunner" Gunder fought in the H Company, 398th reg. 100th infantry. I just want to thank everyone for all their help in helping me and my family to have a better understanding of what he faced daily during the war. I sent out and recieved several letters from the men of H company some did not remember him, some a single story others were his close freinds. Only one matter still remains unclear. My grandfather won a bronze star in Soucht, France on december 3rd, 1944 and we do not know why. I do now he and his platoon were pinned down at one point and several men were recoginized for bravery. I would like anyone who was there or has information to e-mail me and give me an idea of what happen that day. You may remember my grandfather because he drove the chow jeep giving hot meals to the soldiers at the front. Thanks for you time and efforts. My name is Jimmy Walker and I am again trying to gain information on my father (James Alton Walker) who served during WWII. It has been almost five months since I have e-mailed the site. Since then I have found out some information about the pictures that I have. I know that my father had a (cib) and on his discharge papers in the specialtiy area it was infantry (745) I am not sure what this means. He also has a presidental citation with cluster in it, along with other ribbons. I know that he was attached to the 3rd infantry 15th reg. probably after the surrender. He was discharged in May 1946 with the first armored division. (Mr. Williams E-mailed me once before with a James Walker who died 5/95 in K company-399, my father passed away 5/92 could this have been a delayed response to the divisonal information office) If any one has any information please e-mail me. My dad, William Ding served with Company C 325th Combat Engineers. Sadly and unexpectedly he passed away on May 29, 1999. Dad did not speak much of the war, as was the case of many of the war veterans but was very much proud of his service. He wore his Century Division ring with visible pride. He completed Century Division Ranger training and ultimately became the personal driver for the company commander, that being Capt. Lewiston Bagley. He kept in touch with Capt. Bagley for over 50 years till his passing. Dad was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts in locating landmines in the small town of Groetzenbruck, France on Dec. 21-22 1944. I would love to hear from anyone who may have known him or who may have been in the same area. Surely someone whould remember Capt. Bagley. My dad was almost always with him. Because dad never spoke of the war we never realized all that went on over there and the supreme sacrifices that these men made. I have since done alot of research on the 100th Division. I salute each and every one of you. Thank you.

Just finished "The Final Crisis." You all did a splendid job of editing and annotating it. I cannot believe haow close we came to being surrounded, as a Division. Incredible. Looked for some clue as to why the protagonist was named INGRAM, maybe a nick name for Englar? And tried to figure out which was "THE COMPANY." Maybe Fox? I can see why he might have used fictitious names and and anonomous company, but odds are that every one in the regiment knows who he was talking about. Here is a story that reaches across the generations. On November 23, 1999 I posted a message about my father, WILLIAM E. LYMAN, who served in "D" Co. 399th as a heavy machine gunner. He was wounded in Lemberg on December 7, 1944. As a result of this wonderful web site and my posting I received an e-mail message from a veteran who thought he might have known my Dad. We exchanged information and wartime photos. He still wasn't sure if he knew my Dad until he asked if he wore glasses. When I replied, Yes, I received the following message: "Bingo, the glasses and the eyes, I can for sure say I knew your Dad. For a little while my bunk was next to his. ... The night your Dad was wounded was a night to rember. The Germans were giving us hell with their artillery. I heard someone say, 'I'm hit'. It turned out to be your Dad. The medics put a dressing on his wound and he was shipped back. There was only five or six of us that were not wounded out of thirty five. Steve, be proud of your Dad. He was a good soldier who did his job well and never complained". This man who told me this story - - that I never would have heard but for this web site - - is now 77 years old and lives in California and is, to this day, proud of his generation and what they did for their country. Grandpa passed away this past year, and I have inherited some GREAT photos, and one pretty good story...(He never said much about the war, even though I questioned him countless times. Then one day grandpa was sitting and rocking with my little sister. For some reason he told her how he got his Bronze Star. She had asked about it ..."Grandpa, how did you get that bronze star?"(he had never told me). I have an historical question for you all : 25 centurymen were considered as "missing in action" at the end of Nov.1944 (15 from 399, 1 from 398, 9 from 397). What means "M.I.A." ? Were they captured by german troops ? Are they killed soldiers which bodies were never discovered, "known but to god" ? Who knew one of them ? I would appreciate to receive testimonies on this subject, pictures from "M.I.A.". I intend to insert in the next edition of "town-newsletter" from Raon to inquire into forgotten graves and try to clear all destinies. Thank you for your support.

My Grandfather was a Sgt. in WWII. He was a member of Company M 397 regimen of the 100th infantry Army Rangers. His name is Jacinto (Joe) Lores. He passed away last January and I have begun to research his millitary accomplishments. I wish to know as much as possible concerning the battle he fought in. I know he was shot in the chest by a sniper and was in a hospital for three months. I do not know much more than that. A friend told me about this website and I hope someone will read this and be able to guide me in the right direction of where to research. I am 22 and never talked to my Grandfather about the war. What a great web page. I just found it. Joined the 100th at Ft. Bragg from ASTP 'The Citadel'. Joined Btry. C, 925th FA and was part of that Btry thru the war. Was an Instrument Cpl in the Detail Section and was east of Lemberg on FO duty when operation NORDWIND began. Actually saw a platoon of Germans march up the Bitche/Lemberg railroad and pass us going to Lemberg. We pulled back to Lemberg and was there when it was heavily shelled. Kentuck "Lawrence Thornberry" picked us up in a jeep the next afternoon in Lemberg. The Battery had left St.Louis bei Bitche and was in Montbronn. The web page is wonderful. Keep up the good work.

My Dad....Alexander Joseph Lapa....was a soldier in the 399th infantry divison.....His nickname during his service years was.....SKULL....My Dad is my HERO...if it was not for him and men like my Dad we would not live as we do today....My Mom and my Dad are still with us today....and my children love to hear Daddy talk about his life during the war....when you realize that my Dad and 99% of the men who served with him were just kids themselves and they put their lives on the line to protect their familes and their unborn children...and my children ...the concept is totally awesome......i my self can`t watch the ww2 movies as i see my Dad every where...a young man of 18....away from all his loved ones ....knowing death was at every step...but still my Dad and men like my Dad faced that threat every day...i have a 13 year old son and i hope he never has to go through what my Dad did.....But if it does come to that i can only hope and pray that he faces each day as my Dad did...standing strong and proud in the face of death...I salute all the men through our history who have fought for their familes and their country...may they be thrice blessed in heaven...I am so proud of my Dad.....

We were attached to the 100th when they landed in France and were with them to the endof the war. Do not recall which Inf Divs were were with. Hq was attached to 100th Div HQ. I am so happy to see a site such as this. I am the son of a "Son of Bitche" and proud of it. My father was Leonard J. Levandowski of the 397th L Company. Sadly, dad passed away on March 30, 1985, he would have been thrilled to no end to see a tribute such as this site. I have some very fond memories of all the reunions which I attened with my parents (Phily, Lake George, Kingston, Boston).I watched a horror movie in Boston, I think it was, fell asleep and locked my parents out of their room. They had to break down the chain lock to get in. I must have stood out like a sore thumb at those gatherings as I was born when my father was 41. Does anyone remember the Sagamore Hotel in Lake George, NY? I took my first Helecopter ride there and went on to become a pilot(I've got a great fish story from there as well). Does anyone remember me, a child that seemed too young to be at those reunions? I remember pairing up with a boy my age once, who's name was Robert Spirroff (please forgive the spelling). Some names I remember were: Ray Denman, Pappy Haas and Dave Bickford. My mother and I attened the 50th reunion in Louisville Back in '95 or '96 and saw Ray and his wife. I saw Dave and his wife Evette about 10 years ago at a Florida reunion in Deland, FL. I remember asking Ray why my fathers uniform, which he wore to come home, was so small that I could not wear it even when I was 18. He explained to me about Dysintary and all of the many hardships they endured, that left them with very little meat on their bones. It was at that moment that I realized what a great sacrafice all of you made for us and this great country of ours. THANK YOU ALL! My father beamed when he spoke of the 100th and it's men and I am proud to share that heritage! I'd love to hear from any one who has the time to write, especially anyone who new my dad.

My father LORIN C. SPEAKER served with the 100th, 397 INF 3rd Platoon 3rd Squad S SGT. He received the Silver Star from Ubach, France, Purple Heart, France. This is the most I have ever known. My father never talked about any of this to us. This website is great, it tells me more about his life those years. He died March 10, 1992. If anyone out there knew him or could tell us more about his journey's in Europe, please email me. I would really appreciate it.

An interesting happend to me on Veteran's Day. I was asked to come to our Jr. High and talk to the 10 to 13 year old students about my experiences with the 100th and being a POW. I told them of some of the high points which took about 30 minutes. When I finished what I thought was a very interesting and informative talk, I asked for questions. One young ladyu asked, "What is a foxhole?" That brought my feet back down to earth.

I just enjoyed reading an inspiring new novel about courage and sacrifice in WWII and wanted to pass that along to everyone who shares the same interests as I do. The book is "The Triumph and the Glory", got my copy at amazon.com, none of the bookstore chains here in the Twin Cities have any copies anymore, they sold out. Keep up the great work on the website, and remember all of the veterans who answered the call, especially take a moment on this Veteran's Day to remember those we lost so long ago.

A very nice piece of history. This new technology is invaluable as a tool to keep experiences like these alive for people who were born long after the events described. I was not privileged to see combat during my twelve years of military service, first as a Navy enlisted man, and then as an Air Force Pilot, so I am grateful for sites like this that describe these sacrifices made by previous generations on our behalf. Although I heard a lot about the air war from senior officers and non-coms who were veterans of that conflict, both during my Air Force and airline careers, I'm glad of the opportunity to read about the experiences of members of other branches of the service.

I really enjoy reading history about the 100th as it keeps the patriotic spirit alive in me. There is a lot of great information here, but I do have a suggestion. As a member of the 100th Division Band, I would like to see and be able to read more of our history and our particular involvements such as in the the honors and lineage page.

Thank you for a wonderful web site that remembers the brave men who fought for the world's freedom! My father, Anthony Christobek, received a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Sadly, I must inform others that he passed away in March of 1988. He would have been pleased with the work that was invoved in this web site and, on his behalf, I thank all involved with their hard work and effort to establish this site.

Have recently received my service records and have at long last found out that I served in Company B 399th from Ft. Bragg to Enchenberg, where I was wounded on Jan. 3,1945. After being wounded I was transferred to a hospital in Eng. and then assigned to the 8th Air Force. Moving around the country I lost my records and as I have grown older I could not recall my company and regiment in the 100th. Now that I have found myself I would like to hear from anybody from the same company and especially anyone who was on the high ground at Bitche on Jan.1,1945.

Reading these stories, as told by the men who served in the 100th Infantry Division is quite moving. A relative of ours, PFC Eugene Greenbaum, Company L, 399th, was killed in December, 1944 in France. Could anyone tell me to which companies in the 397th Infantry were Seymour Millstone and Frederick F. Schmeiser assigned? Both men were captured in January 1945, and later died in German captivity. Further, if any of you happened to have known either man personally, please contact me, as I would like to get some background information or stories on either man. I am writing a history of their POW captivity and background information would be useful.

Hi my father Robert B. Wagoner, Sr. was in the 100th during World War II. He was in the anti-tank company of the 397 Regiment. He saw action in Rimling area of France, including Petit Rederching, Hottviller,etc. He was award the Bronze star while fighting in this area. He also saw action in the Heilbronn and Stuttgart area of Germany. I had the honor of visiting these areas with him this August. I have read many different accounts of the events and I am looking for more information and pictures. I would be happy to scan any picture that anyone would be willing to share with me and would be willing to share Dad's with others. I just wanted to up date my post below. with the help of the fine people involved in this web site I now know a little more about my grandfater Cpl. Clifford Edward Gunder of Elmont NY. He served with Co. H 398th reg. 100th infantry. This is from what I know understand a heavey weapons company. If anyone remembers my grandfather please contact me at I would love to hear your story even if you did not know him. Unfortunatly Clifford experienced many hardships after the war while also having 10 children with his wife Marie. He developed a drinking problem which got him eventually thrown out of the family. Not much is know after that. He died in a VA hospitol in New York of tb in 1974. Not much is know about him and we want to know about his war exploits so can possibly understand his difficultly's after the war (he never drank before the war). Any information would be helpful. He won a bronze star in Soutch, France but no one knows why in my family? We as a family would like to remember him for some thing he did that we could be proud of not for his down falls. Thanks to all that served, fought and died so we all could remain free.

I just found out my grandfather served in the 100th division in the 398th reg I am not sure of the company. His name is Clifford Edward Gunder out of New York. Unfortunatly he past away in 1974. Nothing is really known of his service to his country. We think he won a bronze star and purple heart(the medal were lost). If anyone knew him I would be very interested in finding out what kind of a soldier he was and were he fought. Any info on the 398th would be helpful I don't know the company letter. He enlisted in nov of '42 and was discharged in oct of 1945. thanks for your time.

I was born in Raon l'Etape, a city that most of veterans from 100th USID will never forget... My father is mayor from this town and received the card giving him the proud title of "Son of Bitche". I possess a very nice private museum about the fights in our town and forest. I am preparing a book concerning the fights in and around Raon, with also a lot of unpublished german documents. I would be very glad to add unpublished stories from veterans who fought there or where wounded there. I would appreciate to receive pictures from involved veterans, from my town during this period, or other pictures "in situation". I would be glad to receive you at home if you intend to visit our region. You would probably be very surprised to see that most of the positions are always to see in our forests !!! As a conclusion, I would be very proud to have contact with soldiers who risked their lives to free Raon l'Etape and the area. Many thanks.

Congratulations on a great website. I was transferred from the ASTP at The Citadel to the 100th Infantry Division at Fort Bragg in the spring of 1944. A month or two later, I was transferred to the newly formed 93rd Chemical Mortar Battalion at Camp Rucker. Served with 93rd in Europe as part of 3rd Army. Believe most of ASTP buddies remained with 100th and would enjoy hearing from any of them.
